GOLDIE TIMELESS ALBUM COVER

GOLDIE – Timeless – Album Review

GOLDIE - Timeless - Album Review

During the period of 1992 - 1995 i spent a lot of my spare weekends, and most of my money visiting London, purely to buy records.

To me, as a young up & coming DJ back then, getting friendly with the guys in the best shops around the UK meant you stood a better chance of getting the best upfront music held over for you before you arrived, and therefore (in theory) standing out from those DJs who just shopped in Virgin Megastore. It also taught me so much about how record shops were organised and run.

Some of the main inspiration for my own shops came from these legendary institutions.

I was heavily into jungle and early breakbeat hardcore back then and my first ever mixtapes that i would sell at raves for £5.00 were all filled with tunes i got in London, from labels such as Reinforced, Moving Shadow, Metalheadz, Basement, Formation etc - these records are worth an absolute fortune now when you try to purchase one that you may have given away at some stage over the years.

I bought this particular album from one of my favourite record shops in the world - Black Market Records

This small, but perfectly formed aladdin's cave of the coolest, upfront vinyl was situated right bang in the middle of Soho, in London's West End and attracted music buying tourists from all over the world.

When you entered the shop and squeezed your way through the throngs of House Music & Garage buyers all frantically trying to get the latest promos to themselves, there was a door, further down the store that lead you down a very narrow, acoustic foam padded stairway, into the basement - this is where the Drum & Bass / Jungle was housed. To me, this was just the coolest place on earth.

This shop was like the holy grail of all things upfront. Everything Nicky (Blackmarket) behind the counter recommended must be brilliant, so therefore it was purchased - and mostly for £5.99 as well (crazy)

So, Goldie's monumental album Timeless was purchased, along with a huge bag of white labels and pre-release gems, and a couple of house nuggets from upstairs on the way out (obviously)

For me, setting aside that it is THE absolute essential underground breakbeat album of the 90’s, this album is more about summing up the peak years in the early stages of a young lad's DJ career and most importantly, the knowledge that we all gathered from music like this.

The level of work that Goldie and studio partner Rob Playford ploughed into this album is nothing short of jaw dropping. The razor sharp, non formulaic drum programming, soulful chord progressions and atmospherics throughout are so intricate and thought provoking. Tracks on this album like the iconic "Inner City Life" were light years ahead of their time. They raised the bar and set a precedent at the time to which the rest had to follow. This album upped everyone's game in my opinion.

This was one of the first electronic long players that i bought and appreciated as an absolute journey to sit down and listen to. These weren't club DJ tracks for me.

Ironically i still believe this record to be ‘Timeless’ as in, locked in a certain period but not affected by the passing of time or changes in fashions.

I think as we mature and understand life a little bit more, music like this from our formative years actually means so much more. It's a stamp in our own personal growth timeline.

This is just a stunning album to me.

STEVIE WONDER – Innervisions – Album Review

STEVIE WONDER - Innervisions - Album Review

This, to me, is Stevie Wonder’s finest 44 minutes and one of the most stunning records ever written, on so many levels of both musicianship and songwriting.

It always blows me away to think that this chap was only 23 in 1973 when "Innervisions" was released.

I've been a longtime lover of the Fender Rhodes piano. Its rich, unique, and instantly recognisable chords can be found on at least five of the tracks on this album, including one of the most well-known songs, "Living For The City" This song tells the story of a young black man from Mississippi and his experiences of discrimination as he tries to find a job. Then, on moving to New York in the hope of better times, finds himself, shortly after stepping off the bus, being arrested and subsequently locked up for 10 years.

Probably the most popular song on the album is the uber-funky offering "Higher Ground," which features the unusual, quirky sounds of the Clavinet as its main driving hook. The track was supposedly written about reincarnation.

Wonder himself said when asked about the song, "I would like to believe in reincarnation. I would like to believe that there is another life. I think that sometimes your consciousness can happen on this earth a second time around."

This album, to me, has the maturity of an LP that was written by someone twice or more Stevie's age. Everything within the beautifully organic structure just slots into place so perfectly, and there’s a wonderful air of soulful perfection in his young voice that Wonder makes sound effortless throughout its entirety.

The messages within songs such as "Living for the City" and "Jesus Children of America" are still highly  relevant and very important, 50 years later.

The connection between musicianship, songwriting, and production throughout this entire album is just jaw-dropping for me. As with a lot of Wonder's albums, the lyrics, composition, and production of Innervisions are almost entirely his own work.

Records like this stand the test of time. I urge you to listen to this album again at your earliest convenience, in its entirety.

One of the most spiritually uplifting records that I own and keep coming back to time after time.

BLACK SABBATH – Heaven And Hell – Album Review

BLACK SABBATH - Heaven And Hell - Album Review

Day 19 of my 50 big albums of all time and to those that have stuck with me, i thank you very much. If i have influenced even one person to check out something for the first time, then that makes me very happy.

My tastes have always varied drastically from the most laid back ambient tones right through to the heaviest and darkest.

One thing i will say is that i have never believed myself to be a musical snob, i feel that if someone goes to the trouble of producing a collection of sounds together to make a song, they deserve massive praise for it..regardless of it's style.

SO...here's another of the 5 bands who feature twice in my top 50.

For me personally there have always been two Black Sabbath’s, Sabbath ‘Ozzy’ and Sabbath Dio

Ozzy being the original worshipped leader at the band's root core will always hold pride of place for me as there is just a completely different level of edginess to this man’s voice projection and eerie stage presence.

This was Ronnie James Dio’s first album for Sabbath after Ozzy’s departure and for a man of 5ft 4” this chap packed one of the biggest, most powerful voices in rock music history, Fact! The fact of Sabbath having a few other singers like Ian Gillan / Tony Martin through the years are very rarely mentioned with any great fondness in the rock history books.

Right from the get go on this album when ‘Neon Knights’ power’s in it delivers some of the biggest songs ever in the metal archives. ‘Heaven And Hell’ itself is just an epic performance on an entirely different level. Tony Iommi’s guitar is absolutely stunning throughout. The parting shot of ‘Lonely Is The Word’ showcases what a complete band these guys were.

You can sense the urgency in Dio’s voice throughout this entire masterpiece, like he had such heavy boots to fill and needed to pull out all the stops and make this one count in order to be accepted by the Sabbath die hards. I believe he did so, on a grand scale.

This album was released in 1980 and the production is ever so slightly cleaner than previous but still leans back to the sheer grit of the unpolished 70’s. Every song on this album just works for me.

I believe that no-one other than Dio could have got away with replacing Ozzy and that's what makes this album very special for me. I always loved the fact that the band went full circle and Ozzy came back to his rightful place again in years to come.

As i say most days, if you’re not a fan or might have built up an idea of what you think a band are over the years, i urge you to set this aside for 40 minutes and judge a classic album on the merits of a unique collective of individuals coming together in perfect harmony to create seriously big songs. It doesn’t happen on this scale very often.

Absolute 100% winner that i will always keep coming back to.

RIP Ronnie James Dio

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2024.

Thank you all so much for your continued support throughout 2023.

The big things I’ve learned.

Well now. In my 52.5 years on this planet 2023 was the one that I’ll certainly not forget in a hurry.

Loosing 3 family members in just a matter of months and learning of many old friends passing away throughout the year has really brought it home very quickly, just how fragile and precious life is.

Also the many close family and friends who are battling a wide range of serious health conditions are never far from my thoughts ❤️

One of the many things I’ve learned this year is not to judge people by their social media presence. I’ve met people for the first time who I thought, from reading their heavily opinionated social posts would be very loud, confident and extroverted in person but who turned out to be quite shy and reserved when I met them. On the other side I’ve met people who have zero opinion or presence online but in person could quite confidently engage an entire room full of people for hours.

In the coming year, i hope that all my family and friends can help each other and have positivity in your lives.

Embrace new opportunities, cherish meaningful moments, and let optimism fuel your journey.

I wish you all a joyous and fulfilling 2024!

LEFTFIELD – Leftism – Album Review

LEFTFIELD - Leftism - Album Review

This album holds a very special place in my heart.

Leftfield made an immense contribution to the soundtrack of my early 90s. The group, originally formed by Neil Barnes and Paul Daley are still to this day classed as one of the most influential acts in the development of the electronic music scene.

I still rate the timeline of 1990 to 1995 as the best half decade of my life, for so many musical and social reasons. Many of the friends i made during that stage of my life are still very close. We share a common bond that has been very rarely matched since.

From the moment the dub reggae infused stormer "Release The Pressure" drops on this album, you immediately know the craic and what is about to unfold.

"Song Of Life", i have played so many times over the years in DJ sets and it still sounds so fresh. "Original", is probably one of the more well known chill / electronica tracks on the album while you have 100% dance-floor bounders such as "Black Flute", "Space Shanty" and their immense collaboration with former Sex Pistol John Lydon on "Open Up"

My love of this album has grown even more over the years as my ears have matured and i now truly appreciate how this was such a groundbreaking piece for its time. Leftfield were one of the first of the new breed of dance / electronic acts to get past the single stages and release an album that people would actually come off the dance floor and listen to in a home environment, in it’s entirety.

I think in an eye opening way at the time, this album and a couple more that also feature in my top 50, made many people, including the music press and critics, realise that this new form of dance / electronic / rave music was here to stay and not just the passing fad that many of them predicted.

These were real acts who could get past the sweaty dance floor stage and command a place on the average person’s coffee table and in the charts.

I still get offered second hand vinyl copies of the original pressing of this album, and 70% of the time they will be battered by a lifetime of heavy party use, have hot rock burns on their sleeves and the vinyl inside will be played to absolute death by a multitude of different friends who borrowed it down through the years.

If pieces of 12 inch vinyl could talk, this particular LP would tell many a tale of psychedelic, afterdark shenanigans.

The memories locked within these tracks and the lifelong friends i made whilst playing this album will stay with me forever, and the reactions i’ve had off dance floors over the years from some of their music, are still some of the best i have ever seen and will quite possibly never be matched by another act’s music.

If you’re having a few refreshing beverages this weekend, take some time to reacquaint yourself with the sheer brilliance of the music within this album and what it meant to one of the most important generations in music history.

SADE – Love Deluxe – Album Review

SADE - Love Deluxe - Album Review

Day 15 of my top 50 lifetime albums was previously posted on my Facebook page as i approached my 50th birthday back in 2021.

On a previous album review i mentioned the fact of not having many crushes throughout life. If it is possible to develop a crush on a voice then this is such.

This collection of songs takes my music appreciation sensors to a completely different level. I’m actually starting to get worried about leaving albums out as i’m already posting acts that should probably be in my top 10.

This particular album makes me thankful for having ears, relatively unscathed hearing and most of my senses still in tact.

This lady’s voice is like the most luxurious of chocolate, like the softest velvet, like a warm breeze coming off the sea as you walk along feeling the sand between your toes. Get the idea?

Today’s album is quite possibly one of the finest R&B / Soul albums ever written. The vocals and gentle harmonies throughout this entire album never fail to give me goosebumps and are a complete masterclass in songwriting and chord structuring.

Many Sade fans overlook this album for their more chart friendly Diamond Life and Stronger Than Pride, and that's understandable. For me though, Love Deluxe is just a level further.

All of their other albums have one or two stand out tracks that everyone knows but for me this has always held an extra special level of depth and song structure throughout. “No Ordinary Love’ is such a beautifully uplifting song. ‘Like A Tattoo’ uses some of the most subtle Spanish style guitar with complementary piano and gorgeous laid back chords. Every song on this album is a complete winner on every level.

These songs have a way of building and picking you up without you even realising what’s going on, with every listen you pick up a subtle emotion that you hadn’t noticed previously, maybe that's down to the production, lets not forget that Sade is also an incredible, accomplished band which perfectly surrounds this lady's sultry tones.

‘Pearls’ is still one of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever written. We may never actually know what the lyrics were truly meant to symbolise, but the basic structure is penned around the difficult, underprivileged world of a Somalian lady and her day to day life struggles. Sade's many beautiful songs have always been about love, hope, loss and triumph.

The stunning, haunting melodies of Pearls is nothing short of being a songwriting, musical masterpiece. If you have never heard this song or maybe forgotten about it, please please please take 5 minutes with some headphones, close your eyes and build a movie in your head around the words within. I defy anyone to not feel some emotion.

An absolutely stunning album on every possible level.

DEPECHE MODE – Songs Of Faith And Devotion – Album Review

DEPECHE MODE - Songs Of Faith And Devotion - Album Review

Day 17 in my top 50 albums of all time.

One of only five bands that feature twice in my top 50.

What more can you say about Dave Gahan, Martin Gore & co other than they present the entire 360 of what is required to become a worldwide act that stand the test of time and build a devoted fan-base of millions.

Through musicianship, songwriting and stage presence Depeche Mode have never ceased to push the levels of what could be achieved by a band who cross so many spectrums of sound.

I feel very privileged to have seen them a couple of times and have been completely awestruck and emotional by the show they put on each time. I have friends who are proper die hard fans and have followed them around the world, i can totally understand this concept.

During the 80’s i loved their music but was too young to appreciate the entire package, it’s only as you grow older and follow someone like Gahan’s story with his many highs and lows that you build a real connection about how things could have been so much different for them.

Following their previous and absolutely massive album ‘Violator’ was always going to be difficult task, but the addition of a whole heap more dimensions to the production, crunchy new beats and sublime new textures took Songs Of Faith And Devotion on a completely different ride.

‘Condemnation’ is filled with spirituality and hope, while ‘Walking In My Shoes’ is one of the few songs that will give me goosebumps until the day i die, regardless of how many times i hear it. ‘Higher Love’ is bigger than God himself while 'In Your Room' has the power to completely remove the top of your head.

Over the years i have taken entire weeks of bingeing the DM catalogue and getting completely lost in a wall of sound. Their music has the power to pick you up, help you do a lot of soul searching and offer such hope and inspiration.

There will never be another band in the world like Depeche Mode.

Another absolute masterpiece of an album.

RIP Andy Fletcher

KRAFTWERK – The Man-Machine – Album Review

KRAFTWERK - The Man-Machine - Album Review

Day 16 of 50 and things are starting to get serious now. The big guns are coming out!

I have tried to steer away from making this a countdown of favourites in their order of preference as it would be just too difficult to put them into exact numerical sequence. This particular masterpiece would however be right up there with the finest in this 50, and I’m pretty certain a lot of my friends and extended music family might agree with me.

Kraftwerk is a German electronic band formed in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. This particular album of which i speak The Man-Machine was released in 1978 and is quite rightly considered by many high level producers and DJs as the most pioneering work in the history of the electronic music genre.

The album features tracks such as "The Robots" and "The Model", both of which have had a staggering influence on the development of so many electronic productions and even popular music itself.

With a sound that was light years ahead of its time and cover art which has become iconic, The Man-Machine remains a timeless and influential work in the world of music.

I know you all have your faves and I too have many favourites scattered across their entire catalogue, but ‘The Man-Machine’ holds a very special place in my heart, for the music within and also what it represents to a lifetime of electronic music.

If ever an act defined a generation of music that I hold so dear to my heart, it is Kraftwerk. I’m not going to get deep into explaining their use of synthesisers, drum machines and how their music has been sampled by other artists thousands of times down the years as I would bore the balls off everyone, let’s just say that i believe we would be in a much different place in the world of music if these guys had never existed. I believe that anyone who has ever enjoyed any kind of electronic music owes these guys a lot of thanks.

At just 36 minutes long it is 36 minutes of sweet beautiful bleeps, beats and layering that has never been truly rivalled to this day. This is electronic music at its wholesome root core and the fact that this album was released 45 years ago and still sounds so fresh is testament to what pioneers of any musical genre should represent.

I say this pretty much every day, but please grab your next available 36 minutes with some big speakers or headphones and marvel at the stunning genius of this album, for the first time, or for old times sake.

This is without question, in my humble opinion, the finest electronic music album ever written.

RIP Florian
